Alice Dunbar-Nelson

Dunbar-Nelson was one of the seminal female writers in the Harlem Renaissance. She was highly educated and described as an independent woman for time.

Lillian Fadderman writes in Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers: A History of Lesbian Life in Twentieth-Century America that Dunbar-Nelson’s first marriage collapsed partly because of her lesbian affairs.
