Claude McKay was from Jamaica but went to the United States with aspirations of becoming a successful writer. It did not happen for him as he died penniless.

McKay was thought to be bisexual. Although he had women companions, Tyrone Tillery suggests McKay’s suspected secret visits to gay bars in New York in the 1930s create a pattern with the homosexual undertones in some of his works.
